A semi-autobiographical short novel. The narrator, a gay virgin wins the Lottery and describes the reactions of three people to his new-found wealth. The straight best friend, who always has a girlfriend, the married neighbour who enjoys noisy marital sex and the young gardener, all show varying reactions to his money.
The novel describes in intimate detail how the narrator loses his virginity. Now that he is wealthy, sex suddenly seems readily available, whereas it wasn’t before! But people are always asking him what he will do with the money!
Excerpt:
I was shy and more or less a virgin. I’d tried girlfriends half-heartedly. Two girls, Mary and Helen, I’d gone to bed with but had not succeeded in getting it up successfully for long enough. I found my early boyhood attraction to males had increased as I went into adulthood. But I was not successful at that either! The males I fancied from school onwards had been straight, with no reciprocal attention back from them. So, sex was confined to masturbation about males that I fancied and the odd fumble in the cinema with men who wanted to feel me and me to feel them.
