A Story of Conflict
This story is about the Reverend Roger Knight, married with a child, but with a troubled past. It lays out his spiritual struggle as regards his sexuality. He believes the Devil is tempting him and seeks to be saved by his devotion to God.
At clerical college he was tempted by a worldly, former sailor. Now, in his parish, he is tempted by a young male gardener. He struggles against what he believes to be the Devil tempting him into ungodly behaviour with handsome men.
The novel is set in the nineteen-
As usual in Richard Peters’ novels this one deals directly and explicitly with a man’s attraction for males, but in the context of God and the Devil, temptation and restraint, good and evil, heterosexuality and homosexuality.
